Policy Officer – European Commission

Mark Smitham is a Policy Officer at the European Commission, working on AI for Societal Good with a focus on AI-enabled smart cities and communities and European preparedness. He collaborates with policymakers and technology experts on AI model development and digital technology diffusion, to promote a European approach for safe, trustworthy and human-centric AI.

Prior to rejoining the European Commission in 2025, Mark advised global tech companies on EU digital policy, including AI, cybersecurity and connectivity. He previously worked at the European Commission on cloud,
cybersecurity and cross-border data flows, and held senior roles in the UK Government, where he led high-profile IT and cloud policy initiatives in secure environments. He began his career driving digital service improvements in municipal administration.

Mark holds an MSc from the University of the West of Scotland and an MA from the University of Glasgow.
